Later, Miranda’s hope to escape had been foiled by the fact that Taz had awoken before her. As her eyes fluttered open, she could smell the bacon cooking downstairs.

There was a note on the bed that read: There’s a towel in the bathroom for you to shower. I hope you’re hungry.

Miranda went to the bathroom, showered quickly, and when she came out of the bathroom with the large towel wrapped around her, Taz was there. He had a tray with food, on which was a plate with bacon, toast, scrambled eggs; there was also a mug of coffee, beside which was sugar and cream.

“I don’t know how you like your coffee, but I brought some sugar and some cream just in case. I hope you like scrambled eggs and bacon. I took the liberty of buttering the toast, I hope that’s okay.”

Miranda stared at him, wondering if this was for real. First of all, he was wearing boxer shorts only, exposing most of that absolutely phenomenal body to her. It was like waking up and having a GQ model bring you your breakfast. She almost pinched herself. She had to be dreaming.

“It all looks delicious and smells fantastic. What about yours? You didn’t eat without me, did you?”

“I figured I’d bring this up to my sleeping beauty first. I’ll bring mine up to join you.”

He gave her a soft kiss on the lips, then left the room. Miranda’s heart fluttered. Never in her wildest dreams had she expected something like this to transpire this weekend. Ever, actually. She felt such happiness in her heart, and yet there was also some fear.

When Taz returned with an identical plate to hers, they both began to eat. “We could just as easily eat downstairs,” Miranda said.

“Or we could do something different. Like eat breakfast in bed. I feel that in so many ways I’ve lived my life playing by all the rules. But what has that gotten me?”

“A fabulous career?” Miranda offered.

“It’s been great, sure. But it’s also gotten me a failed marriage. Maybe I should have taken different risks.”

Miranda’s phone began to ring, interrupting the moment. “I’d better get that,” she said. “I’ll be quick.”

She hurried off the bed, found her purse and fished out her phone. Melanie’s smiling face was flashing on her screen. “Hey,” Miranda answered cheerfully.

“Where are you?” her sister said without preamble. “Everyone’s worried.”

“I … I’ll be home soon.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“I’ll explain when I get back.” She paused. “You don’t have to save any breakfast for me. I’m eating now.”

“With whom?”

“Like I said, I’ll tell you when I get home.”

“Miranda—”

“Bye, Melanie.” Miranda quickly ended the call.

“Your sister?” Taz asked.

“Yeah. I think they’re losing their minds over there. I should have left last night.”

“You regret staying?” Taz asked, meeting her eyes.

Miranda didn’t regret it, so she said nothing, just shook her head.

“What are your plans for the rest of the day?” he asked.

Miranda’s stomach lurched at the question. She sipped some of her coffee, then said, “Taz, this has been fun.
